Golmaal Returns Movie Review

Movie Review: Golmal Returns
Movie Star Cast: Ajay Devgan, Tusshar Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Arora, Celina Jaitley, Arshad Warsi and Shreyas Talpade
Director: Rohit Shetty
Two years ago, Rohit Shetty came up with a breezy entertainer Golmaal, which, most people agree, is the capable director's finest work to date. The comic scenes hit the right notes and buttons. But Golmaal Returns treats the viewer like a nitwit, with zero brains. No-brainer laughathons have worked in the past and people have catapulted these films to 'must watch again and again' category.
Golmaal Returns is simply unbearable! Director Rohit Shetty is back with a film which he refuses to call a sequel. It needs to be made clear that the film is not actually a sequel of the hit comic caper Golmaal (2006) by the same team. It just has the same four main protagonists of the original in a different situation.
It's more like what Lage Raho Munnabhai was to Munnabhai MBBS. Golmaal released in 2006 and did good business throughout the country, which lead to the decision of making Golmaal Returns. As Sharman Joshi made way for Shreyas Talpade (Sharman had blocked dates for Dilli 6, a role which he eventually lost). Rimii Sen, the only female character in Golmaal made way to 4 leading ladies - Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Arora, Celina Jaitley and Anjana Sukhani.
Golmaal Returns tells the story of Gopal (Devgan) who along with his wife Ekta (Kareena) stays together house along with sister Esha (Amrita) and a dumb brother in law Lucky (Tusshar). Ekta’s is a very suspecting wife whose suspicion habit is further influenced by watching Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji TV serials. One night, Gopal has to spend the night out with a beautiful young lady Mira Nair (Celina) on a yacht due to some unforeseen circumstances. But to avoid any misunderstanding with his wife, he lies to her that he was with his friend Anthony Gonsalves that night. One lie leads to another and Gopal to save his skin has to involve his junior, Laxman (Shreyas) but then a corpse of his office employee is found and the investigating officer happens to be Madhav (Arshad) whom Gopal hates. All this leads to a huge chaos where everyone is busy hiding something and ending up lying to one another to avoid further problems!
To be fair there are a few funny situations here and there but they appear funnier only because of the actors enacting them, especially Tusshar and Shreyas. Golmaal Returns is Tusshar Kapoor's show. The actor delivers a knockout performance in what could be remembered as his most memorable character ever. Ajay Devgan performs well in a role that could have been taken to new heights by Akshay Kumar; always believe Akshay was perfect for Devgan role in Golmaal. Shreyas Talpade ensures the audience won't miss Sharman Joshi. Kareena Kapoor in a role of a suspicious wife is good. Arshad Warsi surprisingly has a miniscule role. Celina Jaitley was super hot. And Amrita Arora's role must have been credited as a guest appearance!
The biggest problem with Golmaal Returns is its insane script. The writer has scripted some of the most bizarre of sequences in the name of a mindless comedy, add to it the poor execution and we have a movie that just does not deserve a watch on the big screen. Yes, well directed mindless comedies are great to watch. Movies like Hera Pheri, Hungama or even Golmaal managed to entertain even though the mentioned movies completely lacked sense or logic. No wonder the film flopped badly at the box office.
Amongst the actors, the ones who impress the most are Shreyas Talpade and Tusshar Kapoor. Ajay and Kareena do well but don’t really make a good pair. Poor Arshad Warsi gets the least scope as compared to others despite being excellent in his comic timing. Amrita Arora continues with her dumb belle act. Celina for a change fully clothed manages to bring a few smiles. Murli Sharma, Rakhi Vijan, Ashwini Kalsekar, Vrajesh Hirjee and Mukesh Tiwari lend good support. The music by Pritam isn't great either.
On a whole, Golmaal Returns is terribly let down by the script writers. The direction too is below average. Never expect more comedy and fun in Golmaal Returns than Golmaal major disappointment. A disappointing return of the hilarious Golmaal. No wonder if the movie fails at the box-office.

Fashion Movie (2008) Review

Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Mugdha Godse, Kangna Ranaut, Arbaaz Khan, Harsh Chhaya, Madhur Bhandarkar, Karan Johar, Manish Malhotra, Neil Nitin Mukesh
Director: Madhur Bhandarkar
Producer: Ronnie Screwvala
Music: Salim Merchant & Sulaiman Merchant
Lyrics: Irfan Siddique, Sandeep Nath
The Story:
The story of Fashion begins in Chandigarh, where aspiring model Meghna Mathur (Priyanka) conveys her wish to go to Mumbai to her parents. While her dad (Raj Babbar) out rightly refuses, her mom (Kiran Juneja) is supportive. Against her dad’s wishes, Meghna leaves her house with dreams in her eyes to strike it big in the modeling world. But it is not a path of roses for her as she experiences some major difficulties in her initial days in Mumbai. But she gets a good helping hand with an old acquaintance, Rohit (Ashwin Mushran) an aspiring designer who assists big shot designer Rahul Arora (Sameer Soni). She keeps bumping into another struggling model, Maanav (Arjan) while making the rounds of modeling agencies for auditions. Meghna becomes good friends with Maanav and even starts sharing his apartment after she faces accommodation problems. Meghna gets noticed by India’s top modeling agency Panache’s top official, Anisha Roy (Kitu) who brings her to Panache boss, Abhijit Sareen’s (Arbaaz) notice. Abhijit gets impressed by her ambitious nature and go getter attitude. Panache’s face is Shonali (Kangana) but though very successful, her drug habit starts becoming a problem for her and subsequently for Panache. Abhijit decides to terminate Shonali’s contract and ropes in Meghna in her place. Soon, Meghna is everywhere – right from being the showstopper at the biggest fashion shows in town to fashion magazine covers to print ads to TV commercials. The overnight success spoils Meghna and the budding love relationship between her and Maanav also comes to an abrupt end. What happens after Meghna reaches the pinnacle of success in the modeling world and how her journey also invariably leads to the downfall of Shonali and what shocking things further await Meghna forms the rest of the film.
After the cricically acclaimed and controversial films like Chandni Bar, Page 3, Corporate and Traffic Signal, Madhur has hit a master stroke with Fashion exposing the nasty dark side of the most glamorous profession in the world. Never getting preachy and avoiding stereo types Madhur efficiently handles the subject without getting judgemental even once. He has outshone himself in the technical department making Fashion is most slick product till date. His perfect casting also lifts the film to a totally different angle. In fact one wouldn’t be surprised if Madhur manages to win a National Award with this film as well! Also, perhaps for the first time his climax is not dark where the protagonist ends up being a loser! The film has a bitter-sweet ending.
The screenplay by Madhur, Anuradha Tiwari and Ajay Monga peeks deep into the reality of the fashion world and touches every single aspect of the industry such as casting couch, gay designers, wild lifestyle of models who can’t handle success, backstage dramas during major fashion shows, manipulative head honchos and attitude problems of successful people. After holding the audience’s attention captive for a major portion, the screenplay tends to drag towards the finale moments. Niranjan Iyengar’s dialogues strike a chord.
Priyanka in the most challenging roles of her career, delivers the goods successfully. Kangana despite a short role ends up giving an award worthy performance. Even though it is her debut film, Mugdha Godse shows extreme confidence. Arbaaz Khan is good and so is Sameer Soni. Arjan Bajwa acts well. Kitu Gidwani is graceful whereas Ashwin Mushran is very like able.
Verdict:
Fashion, a truly outstanding film.. must watch for many reasons.

Ajith's Aegan Movie Review

Cast and Crew:
Banner: Ayngaran International
Story, Screenplay, Dialogues and Direction: Raju Sundaram
Casts: Ajith Kumar, Nayanthara, Navdeep, Piyaa, Nasser, Suman, Suhasini, Jayaram and many others.
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja
The Story:
Ultimate Star Ajith had raised all our expectations with his previous flick ‘Billa’ for his sole stylish looks and performance. Ajith offers his best talents to the uttermost level in dance and action sequences. Raju Sudaram hasn’t just remade the film but adapted it according to the tastes of Tamil audiences.
There is no two way about it that Raju Sundaram’s Aegan is a rip-off of Farah Khan’s Main Hoon Na. The director had claimed he was ‘inspired’ by Back To School, probably he must not have seen the Hollywood film! The same script of Main Hoon Naa has been taken, but the director has tried something different in screenplay making some changes. Raju Sundaram has failed in bringing the excellent looks of college and almost all the scenes look artificial.
The film opens with Siva (Ajith Kumar), a CB CID official bumping off international criminals headed by John Chinnappa (Suman). None are able to trap John Chinnappa and problems begin when one of his group members Ram Prasad gets away from him for turning into an approver. Unfortunately, Ram Prasad’s wife is bumped off and his daughter Pooja (Piyaa) gets away from him.
Karthikeyan (Nasser), step-father of Siva as well as City Commissioner appoints him to go ahead as a student in Saint John’s College. It is where Pooja studies and this mission is to trap Ram Prasad who is missing (John Chinnappa can be trapped only on Ram Prasad’s statement).
Getting into college doesn't make things easier for him as none of the college students mingle with him. College Principal Albert (Jayaram) admits him into his college offering him all the facilities and he is a man with five-sense (6th sense is missing – that’s what narrator says in the intro part). Pooja has no likeliness for her father and she finds only delightedness in Kishore (Navdeep).
As Pooja is kidnapped once by the John Chinnappa, Siva rescues them and the entire college reciprocates offering good friendship. Here, begins the jolly ride of fun and frolic with college mania and Siva falling in love with his professor Malikka (Nayanthara) is cool delightedness.
Now Siva gets immersed in college life, with his entire rough and tough characterization being vanished. On the same time, he has to accomplish his mission of trapping the baddies… Well, as the title suggests, he accomplishes the task, but there is something surprising he gets about a new relationship.
The Performances:
Taking on terms of performance, it's just Ajith who rules the show. Be it dance or action or comedy sequences, he does it outstandingly. Nayanthara role as Mallika is chic, her make up and curves with chiffon sarees and halter-neck blouses are eye-catching. Nevertheless, she gets you annoyed with her performance. Navdeep and Piyaa stride with moderate efforts. There are few other outrageous over-the-top depiction of Tamil film stereotypes like Jayaram, Cochin Haneefa and Sriman’s comedy scenes. Suman presented in different dimension of comedy oriented is something new and Sriman accompanying him is a good show. Nasser and Suhasini do justice to their roles.
Raju Sundaram has precisely got the best out of Ajith. 'Thala' Ajith fascinates with his enthusiastic approach in all parts. The trouble with the film is that it looks like an amateurish attempt by debutant director Raju Sundaram especially the lead towards the climax which is a colossal embarrassment. No film is perfect and Aegan is no exception. But it delivers entertainment in reasonable doses.
Musical score by Yuvan Shankar Raja is just OK and not so impressive and only 'Hey Saala' offers grandness and don't miss Ajith's dance over there !!! (thanks to Raju Sundaram to bring the best dance performance ever from Ajith).
On the whole, 'Aegan' is a commercial entertainer for all the masses. Walk into theatres without any expectations of Billa and you will enjoy it. Aegan... "A Time-Pass Mission..."
